Ocala Palms Golf & Country Club may be known as a 55 plus “retirement” community, but the residents are very active when it comes to reaching out to help many needy organizations. Once again several residents of this community contributed to a worthy cause!

That being said, this is the second year residents John and Pat DeJesus have spear-headed a Veterans’ Day Golf and Dinner Tournament in order to support the Florida National Guard Foundation Emergency Relief Fund. This year’s event was held in honor and in memory of Sgt. Jeffrey Mattison Wershow, who was killed in Iraq on July 6, 2003.  Volunteers contributed many hours in order to assist John & Pat to raise monies for this fund.  All contributions are donated for the purpose of  providing emergency  assistance to active duty military and their families who are in financial need.

Special guests for this event included Mrs. Anne Marie Mattison , mother of Sgt. Jeffrey Wershow;  Retired Brigadier Generals Donald  Barnhart, Royce Smith and Richard G. Capps. In addition, several soldiers from the National Guard Headquarters in St. Augustine, FL. attended as well as representatives from local businesses.

The golf tournament consisted of a team format  with 136 men and women. Prizes were awarded for the top three scoring teams in three categories: men, women and mixed teams.

Prior to the golf event, Ocala Palms residents saluted veterans during their annual Veterans Day ceremony. World War II Veteran William Link, a former POW was honored during the ceremony.

John and Pat DeJesus would like to thank the many volunteers and contributors who helped to make this event a success. A total of $24,300 was raised for the emergency relief fund.
