Air Force Association group meets
The Red Tail Memorial Chapter 136 of the Air Force Association (AFA) will hold our September meeting on Thursday evening, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. at the Ocala Airport Administration Building, 750 S.W. 60th Ave. This is our annual awards meeting so plan to get there early. Our meetings are held every month, except August, on the third Thursday of each month at the same location.

‘Treasures’ await browsers
The Pioneer Garden Club will host an indoor-yard sale on Sept. 15 and 16, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The sale promises quality “treasures” and “great” prices, organizers say.

Operation Christmas Child
A fundraiser for Operation Christmas Child, collecting items to fill shoe boxes or donations, will take place at the Walmart on State Road 200 on Sept. 16-17, and the Walmart on Southwest 19th Avenue Road and 27th Avenue on Oct. 7-8.
Saturday, Sept. 17
All About Kids Expo
An All About Kids Expo will take place on Saturday, Sept. 17, in the Paddock Mall parking lot behind Sears from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is free.
The Lions Club vision and hearing screening van will be on site for free screenings. Children of all ages are welcome, Screenings are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring your I-pods or MP3 players and plug them into CHIP and he can tell you if you’re listening at a safe volume.
There will be Ocala Police Dept. Kids Safety information and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office D&A Kits/Cadet Program. Refreshments will be available for purchase.
The event is hosted by Lions Club and Citrus Hearing Impaired Program services (CHIP). The Florida Masonic child ID program will also be there.
Run for autism at Silver Springs
The eighth annual 5K autumn run for autism will be at Silver Springs on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 7:30 a.m. Entries are $15 for adults, $12 for students 19 and under, and all entries will be $20 after Sept. 12.
All run activities take place in the Wild Waters parking lot. The first 200 entrants will receive complimentary custom shirts. M/F awards given to the top overall, top masters, and top three in each 5-year age group from 9 and under to 70+. Walkers are invited and will begin after the runners.
There will be a free kids 1-Mile Fun Run. Post run activities include a drawing for prizes from local businesses and area attractions (Disney, Sea World, etc.), lots of food and fun, and autism information. All participants receive a discounted park admission to Silver Springs, so bring the whole family.

Scandinavian Club to meet
The Scandinavian Club of Marion County invites people of Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian and Swedish descent to join us at our next meeting at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17.
We will meet at the Hilton Ocala, 3600 S.W. 36th Ave. in Ocala.
The menu will be chicken Marsala, mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetable, salad, bread, beverage and dessert. Entertainment will be provided by The Ocala Harmony.

German Americans to celebrate
The German American Club of Marion County will host an Oktoberfest on Sunday, Sept. 18 at the Marion Oaks Community Center; doors open at noon and dinner will be at 1 p.m. Tickets are $20 per member and $25 per non-member. Meal includes chicken schnitzel, bratwurst, leberkaese with onions, sauerkraut, red cabbage, German potato salad, spaetzle and apple strudel. Music provided by Bavarian Oskar. Christian 12 Step fashion show
The Christian 12 Step Ministry of Ocala, an addiction alcohol and substance abuse recovery program, is holding its first fashion show and luncheon. All proceeds will benefit the Christian 12 Step Ministry in their mission to help those in need of substance recovery.
The show will take place on Monday, Sept. 19 at noon in the Royal Oaks Golf Club Dining Room at Oak Run Country Club in Ocala. Tickets are $25 per person and include lunch, entertainment, door prizes and a fashion show exclusively by Beall’s Department Store.
Christian substance abuse treatment effectively combines spiritual healing with a traditional rehabilitation program. The Christian 12 Step Ministry helps heal lives and families here in our community. This fun event of fashion and pampering will help support their mission and our community.

German dinner at St. Jude
St. Jude Catholic Community’s annual German dinner is to be held on Saturday, Sept. 24, at 5:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall of St. Jude, 443 Marion Oaks Drive in Marion Oaks. As usual traditional German fare will be served. Ticket cost is $12 per person for adults and $6 for children under the age of 12. Golf tourney to benefit United Way
College of Central Florida will host a four-person Best Ball Scramble format golf tournament on Saturday, Sept. 24. All proceeds from the event will be donated to United Way of Marion County.
The tournament will be held at Pine Oaks of Ocala, 2201 N.W. 21st St. in Ocala, beginning at 8:30 a.m. The cost is $50 per person.
Entry fee includes golf, cart, lunch and prizes. Hole sponsorships are available for $75 per hole. Sign up forms are available at www.uwmc.org.

The 2011 Marion County Legislative Delegation Meeting will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 27 for the purpose of taking public testimony on issues facing the state of Florida and the consideration of local bills.

Palm Cay craft fair
On Oct. 1, Palm Cay will have its craft fair which will be open to the public. The fair will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Clubhouse. There will be a baked goods sale going on at the same time and also a quilt raffle. Our kitchen will be open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to buy a hot dog for lunch along with something to drink.
Drawing classes at Unitarian Fellowship
Jan Hitchcock will teach drawing Sat mornings at 9:30, beginning Oct. 1, at the Unitarian Fellowship in Citrus Springs. $60 for the series of six lessons in black or colored pencils, with individual attention for all levels. Open house for military officers
The Kingdom of the Sun (KOS) Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America will hold an open house at the Elks Club and Lodge on Oct. 1. There will be an open enrollment period for all Commissioned, Warrant, Flight Officers, Public Health Service Officers on active duty, and retired or former officers who would wish to join the local Chapter.
The Open House will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
John Rose, president of the local KOS Chapter, announced that there will be a 35th anniversary dinner at the Elks Club on Thursday, Oct. 6. Advanced reservations are required for this event. The Elks Club is at 702 N.E. 25th Ave., Ocala.

VFW plans flea market
VFW Post 4781 will hold a flea market on Oct. 7 and 8 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. There will be bargains galore inside out out.
The organization needs your donations of household goods, small or large. Proceeds benefit Veterans Services. Small items may be brought in boxes, and left in the corner of the dining room.
