The terror of 9/11

By Carolyn Slocumb

Last Sunday was the 10th anniversary of a day none of us will ever forget! I’m sure each of you could tell us exactly where you were, and what you were doing when you got the news of the attacks against our country. I was at work in Norcross, Georgia, when my son called and said we needed to turn on a TV or radio. The owner of our company immediately closed the business for the day. For the most part, when we speak of 9/11, it’s about the Twin Towers. However, there were two other tragedies that same day – the plane that was deliberately crashed into the Pentagon and the plane that crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, as 40 passengers and crew attempted to take control of the plane away from the terrorists. The terrorists had planned for that plane, Flight 93, to crash into the Capitol in Washington, DC. Approximately 3,000 people were killed in these attacks. Among those killed were 343 firefighters and 60 police officers from New York City and the Port Authority, and eight private emergency medical technicians and paramedics. Not only were citizens of our country victims, but also nationals of over 70 countries. It didn’t take long for our officials to determine that these attacks were conducted by al-Queda. Suspicion was on Osama bin Laden, but he denied his involvement until 2004. Finally, in May of this year, bin Laden was located and killed. Currently, the memorial at the site of the World Trade Center was scheduled to open on September 11, 2011, and the new One World Trade Center tower is estimated to be completed by 2013. The Pentagon was repaired within a year. The Pentagon Memorial opened in 2008; the Flight 93 National Memorial was to be dedicated on September 10, 2011.
