Ocala West car show

Ocala West UMC Men’s Fellowship Car Show and Chicken barbecue will be held in church parking lot next to the pavilion Friday, April 7 from 5-7 p.m. Chicken will be available for sale until the supplies run out.

The Men’s Fellowship will be serving chicken barbecue to eat in or take out prices: $7 for 1/2 chicken dinner with baked beans, coleslaw, and roll, $5 for ½ chicken or 1/4 chicken dinner. Boy Scout Troop 707 sponsored by OWUMC will be selling hot dogs with chips and a drink for $4.

Saturday, April 8

Ocala West breakfast

Ocala West UMC community wide breakfast prepared by the men’s fellowship will be held from 7:30 – 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 8 and is $6 for all you care to eat.

A varied selection awaits everyone: ham, sausage, scrambled eggs, French toast, waffles, pancakes, corned beef hash, biscuits and gravy, fruit cup, juice and coffee. Breakfast proceeds benefit the many charities supported by the OWUMC Men’s Fellowship.

Sunday, April 9

Jazz Society to perform

The Ocala Jazz Society will be back on Sunday, April 9, one week earlier due to the Easter holiday. We'll be playing Swing, Big Band, Dixieland, 50's and all your favorites from 2 - 5 p.m. Please join us at the smoke free VFW Post 4781, 9401 SW 110th St., across from Oak Run. The band usually performs on the third Sunday of each month.

Choir: Lord Nelson Mass

The Central Florida Master Choir, in its spring concert, will feature Josef Haydn's masterpiece, Missa in Angustiis, the "Lord Nelson Mass." Under the direction of Dr. Harold W. McSwain and accompanied by GayLyn Capitano, and the New Moon String Ensemble, the Mass will feature Christine Woods-Jones (soprano), Deborah Pritts (alto), Kyle Kinsey (tenor), and Cory Alexander (bass). The Master Choir will also offer Mozart's Piano Concerto in A major, featuring Ms. Capitano, a premiered work by Dr. McSwain, and works by Rutter, Sondheim, Abba, and John Fogerty, featuring Bud Meadows, soloist, and Eric Wright, guitarist.

The concert will be Sunday, April 9, 3 p.m. at Countryside Presbyterian Church, 7768 SW Hwy 200, Ocala.

Other dates are Friday, April 21, 7 p.m. at Reilly Arts Center, 500 NE 9th St., Ocala.

Sunday, April 23, 3 p.m. at Dunnellon Presbyterian Church, 20641 Chestnut St., Dunnellon.

Boat Club anniversary

The Ocala Boat Club will hold its 70th anniversary open house on Sunday, April 9, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Guests will enjoy free boat rides on the beautiful Silver River, delicious free pulled pork lunches, along with live music by The Coral Reef Revue, all while meeting fellow boaters and club members.

A free boat safety inspection will be offered to those who bring their boat. Guests may tour our comfortable clubhouse that is also available for rent for various private celebrations.

The Ocala Boat Club is on State Road 40 adjacent to Ray Wayside Park, 9570 NE 28th Lane, Silver Springs, 2.5 miles east of Silver Springs State Park.

Temple plans seder

Temple B’nai Darom will hold a seder on the first night of Passover, Monday, April 10, at 6 p.m. at the temple, 49 Banyan Course, Ocala. The traditional seder will be conducted by Rabbi Harold Jaye. The seder will feature popular Passover favorites with a choice of either a chicken or a vegetarian entrée. The cost is $30 per person. Tuesday, April 11

Congregation plans seder

Congregation Beth Israel of Ocala will hold a Passover seder on the second night of the holiday on Tuesday, April 11 at 6 p.m. at the Royal Oaks Golf Club at Oak Run in Ocala. The seder will be led by Sonia Peterson using a specially written format called the 30 Minute Seder, a haggadah that “blends brevity and tradition” and is endorsed by Reconstructionist rabbi Bonnie Koppell.

The meal will feature traditional fare including gefilte fish, matzo ball soup and choice of London broil, honey crusted cod or lemon chicken. vegetable, sweet potato kugel and dessert and beverage for dessert. Cost is $30 per person for members; $35 for non-members. Reservations are required and seating is limited. Scandinavian Club to meet

The Scandinavian Club of Marion County invites people of Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian and Swedish decent to join us for our annual picnic at Silver Springs State Park (NE 58th Ave. entrance) on Saturday April 15th, 1 p.m. food served at 2. The cost is $10 per person (includes admission to park). Reservations with food preference and payment must be made in advance. Payment must be received by Wednesday the 12th of April. Genealogical Society meeting

The Marion County Genealogical Society will meet Thursday April 20, at 2 p.m. at the Marion County Public Library, 2720 E. Silver Springs Blvd. in Ocala. A brief business meeting will be followed by the April program, "Establishing Genealogical Relationships Prior to the 1880 Census" by Clyde and Kathy Stickney.

Saturday, April 22

Queen of Peace golf event

The Queen of Peace Catholic Church is having its eighth annual Charity Golf Tournament hosted by Knights of Columbus, Council 9649 at Stone Creek Golf Club on Saturday, April 22 (rain delay date is Saturday, May 6). Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Registration fee is $65 per person and includes complimentary morning coffee and donuts, golfers buffet lunch, and golf with cart. Par 3 Hole-in-One prizes include $10,000 or 2 round trip airline tickets to any city in the continental U.S or a LCD Flat Screen TV, or one set of Callaway Irons.

During the event, there will be a longest drive challenge and a closest to the pin challenge.

Sunday, April 23

German American Club to meet

The German American Club of Marion County will hold a picnic on Sunday, April 23, at noon at Coehadjoe Park. The club will provide bratwurst, Polish sausage, hamburgers, German hard rolls, dessert, coffee and soda. Please bring a covered dish to share. Music will be provided by Bavarian Oskar. Casual attire is requested.

Civic Chorale concerts

The Marion Civic Chorale presents “Standing Ovation: Celebrating 30 Years of Singing” on Sunday, April 23 – 3 p.m. (30th Anniversary reception following. All are welcome) at First United Methodist Church, 1126 E. Silver Springs Blvd., Ocala.

The event will be repeated on Sunday, April 30 – 3 p.m. at St. George Anglican Cathedral, 5646 SE 28th St., Ocala.

Featuring our favorite selections from the Classics, Broadway, spirituals and more.

Concerts are free of charge. Donations support our scholarship fund.

Lecture at Countryside

Countryside’s Free University Lecture Series at Countryside Presbyterian Church, 7768 SW Hwy. 200, Ocala continues on Sunday April 23 from 3 to 4 p.m. followed by a question and answer period. Admission is free but there will be a free-will offering.

Dr. Ed Tenhor will talk on “Steps to Longevity.” He will describe what is happening with the longevity studies today. His presentation is often humorous as he shows us the worst 100 foods to eat and the best 100. He will also give a 100 question longevity test which most people only score 18-6 out of 100 but which will give the information on how to achieve longevity. He will point out the “blue zone” on the U.S. where large groups of people live to over 100.

Dr. Tenhor is a well-known local speaker who has lectured on Archaeology, Astronomy, Longevity and Nutrition at Top of the World’s “Master the Possibilities” and local churches, clubs and libraries.
