Bertha Gaskin celebrates at Hawthorne Assisted Living

Hawthorne Village Assisted Living residents turned out in force to honor one of their own.

Bertha Gaskin, a lifelong Marion County resident, turned 100 this weekend, and her fellow residents held a birthday party for her last Thursday.

Surrounded by family and friends, she listened as the crowd sang to her as an entertainer paused from playing memorable songs.

Bertha was born in Blitchton in 1917 and moved to Ocala when she was in high school.

She married Eddie Gaskin n 1937 and they had two children. He died in 1982.

She has four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

She was a graduate from Hampton Junior College in Ocala and Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach.

She worked for Dr. Hogan, an Ocala dentist, and as an educator at the Florida Industrial School for Girls.

She is a member of Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, where she was worshipped for 81 years. She served as a Sunday School teacher and choir member and is the oldest living member. The church held a celebration for her over the weekend.
