Nurse shot as troopers struggle with suspect

Event at West Marion Hospital

On Saturday, June 17, the Florida Highway Patrol had contact multiple times with a pedestrian in the area of the 341 mile marker on I-75, in Marion County.

On the third encounter, the subject identified as Jason R. Gignac, a 38-year-old from Summerfield, requested to be transported to the hospital, as he was ill. He was subsequently taken to West Marion Hospital, by ambulance. After receiving medical treatment the patient was in the process of being discharged when FHP Troopers attempted to take Gignac into custody for Failure To Obey A Lawful Order.

A struggle ensued at which time an FHP firearm was discharged, by the subject. A West Marion Hospital employee (nurse) was struck in the leg by the bullet. The nurse is in stable condition.

Gignac was subsequently taken into custody and booked into the Marion County Jail. He was charged with three counts of battery on a law enforcement officer, 1 count of resisting an officer with violence, and 1 count of resisting without violence.

The three FHP Troopers involved during the struggle received minor injuries.

FHP will be conducting an internal investigation of the incident.

The suspect’s mother reportedly told a TV station that her son had a drug problrm.
